So a couple of weeks ago I did my first ever photoshoot where I was the model! I wanted to capture my baby bump before it was gone but I couldn’t find a maternity photographer based in Bradford, so my husband helped me out and we did our own professional maternity photoshoot.
I can honestly say ‘modelling’ for this photoshoot was one of the most intimidating experiences of my life, a million times scarier than photographing a wedding, or than teaching a classroom full of photography and art students! I have a newfound respect for the bravery and preparation that goes into ordinary women like us taking the time to create these extraordinary maternity photoshoots, while (let’s be honest) we might feel like a whale in a dress!
So now I’ve actually “been there, done that, got the photos!”; I would like to share my top tips for preparing for your maternity photoshoot:
Show off your bump!
Avoid wearing black or baggy clothes, these will hide your bump; remember the whole point of a maternity photoshoot is to capture the memories of your changing body as you carry your child – you’re beautiful, show it off!
What to wear?
Give yourself plenty of outfit choices, I had about 8 dresses that I tried on (and rejected!) the morning before the shoot, I was glad to have lots of choices. Remember if your photoshoot is on location (outdoors rather than in a studio), you may need to be practical; I brought a big warm coat and was wearing trainers throughout. You could also choose to bring a change of outfit to give your photoshoot variety.
Accessorise.
It was actually my husband who reminded me to bring along a few accessories, the peace necklace and the oversized ring, these were fantastic for adding detail to the bump shots and were a little touch that made it special! The floral headpiece was inspired by Pinterest and found on Amazon.
Get your partner or family involved.
This was the one thing I wish I could have done, one amazing advantage of booking a professional photographer is that both you and your partner can be in the maternity photographs; these make for some of the most beautiful photographs and I can’t wait to photograph more expectant couples together. Another wonderful idea is to get older siblings involved in the photoshoot, it’s a great way to help them feel involved and included in the arrival of the new baby and it’s adorable! If I ever have a second child I will definitely include my daughter in some of my maternity shots, maybe with a mini matching floral headpiece.
Relax!
I understand first-hand how incredibly scary this experience can be but now feel more than ever that recording these precious moments into lifelong memories to share with your child-to-be is a wonderful gift. I am so glad I decided to be brave and face my fears, as soon as the photoshoot really began I relaxed and actually ended up really enjoying it and I LOVE MY PICTURES! So will you, I promise.
